
You should be able to see all of the critical information about a gun in the console, and the person aiming it should be recognizable.

Most of the Top Files are only there because they are so old that they raked up the download count, sometimes even overshadowing much better alternatives. This is why you can see outdated or replaced mods in the top files, because their presence there keeps them in the circulation even after they were discontinued. Top Files are the most downloaded ones, and they are the most downloaded ones because they are in the top files. Watch youtube vids of fav mods, ask in the forums, etc.

Only way I have found to deal with that is to go by personal recommendations.

However, mods being overshadowed is a big problem, you're right. not downloaded, unless you specifically filter by total download (if that's even possible.) An example, FOMM has more DL's than PN, but PN is voted more so it's first ranked.
